Can 3T help tackle traffic congestion in the UK?

A new study has named the UK as the third worst country for traffic congestion in Europe, behind Russia and Turkey.

On average, British drivers spend 32 hours a year stuck in traffic jams during peak driving periods. The direct and indirect costs of hold-ups reached £31bn last year, an average of £968 per driver.

As expected, the study found that London is the most congested UK city and the seventh most congested of the 1,000 analysed around the world. This is despite London’s Congestion Charge of £11.50 for vehicles that enter central zones every day. Second to London in the UK is Manchester, followed by Aberdeen, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Guildford, Luton, Bournemouth, Hull and Bristol.

While traffic levels are an annoyance and time waster for all drivers, it is a particular issue for companies transporting goods. It can add costs through higher fuel consumption, cost of the drivers and time. For drivers of freight vehicles specifically, the cost associated with traffic congestion is higher than the average.

There is further evidence that shows UK roads are getting busier than ever: according to Department for Transport figures, the number of miles travelled by vehicles in the UK rose in 2016. 320.5bn miles were travelled last year, up 1.2 per cent on the previous year.

What’s happening?

The Department for Transport (DfT) has highlighted the record 23bn currently being invested in improving roads and keeping the making journeys faster, better and more reliable for everyone.

The 2016 Autumn Statement also showed that the DfT are spending a further £1.3bn over the course of this Parliament on measures to ease congestion and upgrade roads.

What’s the 3T solution?

We can’t make the traffic disappear (well not yet anyway) but 3T Logistics can help you manage transport processes more efficiently, from loading bay management to optimising vehicles and managing delivery with real-time information. Improving vehicle utilisation and reducing empty running will help to reduce the number of vehicles on the road and the time that drivers spend in traffic jams. It’s all about using data to manage your transport processes more efficiently and cost-effectively.
